Things to see and do
Take the opportunity to extend your stay either before or after AOSD '04 and
visit the English Lake District and the attractions in and around Lancaster.
Why not bring along your partner?
Ideas for AOSD '04 participants and accompanying persons:
Explore the historic city of Lancaster
Having begun as a Roman settlement, Lancaster once a bustling port, is
steeped in history and is dominated by its medieval castle. The narrow, Georgian
streets surrounding the castle contain a wealth of attractions, shops and
restaurants.
Spend a few days in the beautiful English Lake District
The Lake District National Park is a land rich in culture, heritage, myth and
legend and has inspired the works of Wordsworth, Ruskin and Beatrix Potter.
- You may fancy a lakeside stroll or more energetic fell walk - there are
plenty from which to choose
- Take a trip by Mountain Goat
or perhaps you'd prefer to hire a car
- Relax and go on a lake cruise on
Windermere or potter around a Cumbrian village, maybe
Grasmere and taste (or take
home) some Grasmere Gingerbread!
Go by train/bus to Kendal
Spend a few hours wandering round this lovely
old market town famous for, amongst other things, its mintcake!
The shopping is diverse with many High
Street names but the town is known particularly for specialist shops - quality
independent traders offering a range of goods unrivalled anywhere in the Lake
District.
