Abstract

Software is key to the success of virtually every business, either because the products marketed are at least partially software or because business operations depend on software. At the same time, there are a plethora of technology approaches on the software landscape. How should an organization make the important decision of which to use? On the flip side, researchers and innovators spawn new approaches with keen insight into the technical problems they address. But how do they motivate businesses to adopt these approaches? And why do some of the most promising technology advances never get embraced? Too often the gap between business goals and software technology is simply not bridged.

Linda Northrop has over 30 years of experience in the software development field as practitioner, manager, consultant, and educator. She is currently director of the Product Line Systems Program at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI).
